Promising engineering/arts scholar Ben Fulton, of St Albans in Christchurch, is encouraging school leavers to consider applying for scholarships at The University of Auckland.

The Christ’s College old boy was awarded a prestigious University of Auckland Scholarship at the start of this year to study towards a conjoint Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (French major).

He says he has relished the opportunities that have come with being a scholarship student. As well as covering all tuition fees, Ben receives two flights home per year, and has access to mentoring and support from a network of other scholars.

“My mentor got me involved in the University Concert Band, and the regular Scholars’ lunch is great for networking,” Ben says.

It was through this network that Ben landed a role as a student blogger on the University website. His popular posts on ‘The Inside Word’ blog tell other students what life is really like as a freshman at university.

“It’s given me ample opportunity to express myself, convey my thoughts, and hopefully have a positive influence on those experiencing what I went through a year ago.”

His advice to anyone thinking of studying at The University of Auckland is to go in with a good attitude.

“Starting university is a new chapter and you have to get excited - be the child walking into Disneyland for the first time,” he says.

About University life, he adds: “There’s so much to do, there’s a great vibe, there’s awesome people. To my mind, I get the best of both worlds - exploring our country’s most vibrant city during the semester, and then skiing at home with friends and family in the holidays.”

The University of Auckland Scholarship provides tuition fees for three years of fulltime study as well as any course-related compulsory fees. It recognises academic excellence as well as leadership potential and all-round ability. Up to 100 are awarded each year.

Applications for the 2016 round of The University of Auckland Scholarships close on August 25.
