Cementing their support

3 February 2010

An agreement is signed between Golden Bay Cement, Pacific Steel and The University of Auckland.

Golden Bay Cement and Pacific Steel have re-signed an agreement to support teaching and research into structural concrete design in The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The support allows the Department to offer a postgraduate course in Advanced Structural Concrete Design, and continue vital research into the use of reinforced concrete and related materials. It will also assist academics to share their findings at international conferences.

Golden Bay Cement is New Zealand's largest cement manufacturer; and along with Pacific Steel (New Zealand’s only manufacturer of 100% recycled reinforcing steel) they are wholly owned subsidiaries of Fletcher Building. Both companies are long-time supporters of the Faculty of Engineering, helping to supply materials for research and working with the University to develop new technologies and techniques related to the use of cement and reinforced concrete.

“Concrete is such a big part of our construction industry because of its versatility, strength and sustainability, and thanks to the incredible industry support we receive, the Faculty of Engineering is at the forefront of new advances in structural concrete design,” says Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor Bruce Melville.
