I came to the Department of Engineering Science in 1998, after completing my PhD in Mathematics. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. My research interests are Network Optimization, Simulation and Statistical Modeling. I am a member of the Network Design and Simulation Group, inside the Operations Research Group at The University of Auckland.

My area of research is computational analytics. I specialise in building models that make use of system measurements to understand the dynamics of those systems, and in many cases incorporate optimisation techniques to help decision makers improve the system performance. The models I build in my research include:

  • Models for data analysis, (such as Generalised Linear Models);
  • Discrete event Simulation Models for capturing the detail of complex systems;
  • Mixed-Integer Programming Models (for optimising complex decisions).

 I have significant ongoing collaborative research programmes with:

  • Researchers at the Centre for Research into Environmental and Ecological Modelling at the University of St Andrews, Scotland (techniques for spatial modelling via regression splines);
  • The Orthopaedics Group at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and Starship Hospital (Statistical Modelling to evaluate effectiveness of technological innovation);
  • Computational analytics researchers at the University of Auckland (improving the efficiency of complex, resource-constrained systems – in particular, Cloud Computing and Health Delivery).
