With suitable choices of courses and project topic, the MEnergy allows for both the concentration on a particular energy form such as wind or geothermal and to cover a range of topics.

Research and taught options

ENERGY 721 - Energy Resources (15 points)
Past, present and likely future uses of various forms of energy focused on electricity generation. Energy resources. Energy economics, prices and markets. Environmental considerations in energy production and use. Climate change, carbon sequestration, carbon trading and carbon taxes.


ENERGY 722 - Energy Technology (15 points)
First and second laws of thermodynamics and thermodynamic cycles. Chemical and biological thermodynamics. Geotechnology for resource exploration and delineation. Engineering technology for production and use of oil and gas, coal, wind, geothermal, tidal, solar, nuclear, bio-fuels. Energy storage, batteries, fuel cells. Energy efficiency.

 

Research option

ENERGY 787A&B - Research Thesis (90 points)
Supervised research project addressing a topic relevant to the technical, economic, environmental, regulatory or business aspects of energy.
To complete this course students must enrol in ENERGY 787 A and B.

 

Taught option

ENERGY 785A&B or 786A&B - Research Project (45 points)
Supervised research project addressing a topic relevant to the technical, economic, environmental, regulatory or business aspects of energy.
To complete this course students must enrol in ENERGY 785 A and B or ENERGY 786 A and B.

Elective courses


With suitable choices for the three elective courses and research topic, the MEnergy programme can be designed to allow students to concentrate on a particular field of energy. Some elective options are listed below.

However, courses can also be “mixed and matched”. For example, a student wishing to get an overview of renewable energy could take one geothermal energy course, one wind energy course and a sustainability course.

Other elective courses are possible within the regulations stipulated by the University of Auckland Calendar.

Elective enrolments are made on a case-by-case basis considering students' prior study and professional experience.
