Student exchange

Information for Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate students about our student exchange programme.

360° Auckland Abroad creates an opportunity for you as an Engineering student to complete part of your degree overseas. You may participate through the student exchange programme, with a choice of more than 62 universities in 24 countries. Other options may include field trips, short courses, volunteering or internships.

Whatever you choose, you can study and live in another culture, make new friends, get international experience, travel, build professional networks, expand your potential. Learn another language if you’d like to break out of your comfort zone – all while earning credits that you will bring back to your Engineering degree.

There are 360° of exciting possibilities. Where will you go?

Who can go?

Selection is based upon:

  • Your enrolment at the University of Auckland in an undergraduate or a taught postgraduate programme.
  • Demonstrated academic merit - a minimum GPA of 5.0 (B average) in the two most recent full-time semesters of study.
  • Suitability of the proposed programme at the host university with your programme of study at the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Your suitability as a representative of the faculty and the University of Auckland.

When can I go and for how long?

As an Engineering student, it is recommended you limit your study period overseas to one semester.

You might be able to go for a full year if you are doing a conjoint degree (note that a maximum of 60 points can be credited towards the Engineering side of your conjoint degree).

The best time for you to go is either semester two of Part II or either semester during Part III.

You should discuss your options with staff at the Engineering Student Centre.

Where can I go?

You can choose where you would like to go, taking into account your personal preferences, language of instruction, courses on offer and funding available.

What will it cost?

Because you will remain enrolled as a University of Auckland student, you will pay tuition fees here and not additional or higher tuition fees at the host university. You may still apply for StudyLink loans or allowances as those are portable while on exchange.

There are also several grants and funding available to help defray the cost of your overseas study.

  • 360° Auckland Abroad Exchange Travel Awards
  • 360° Auckland Abroad Exchange Universitas 21 Awards
  • Auckland Abroad Special Grant
  • University of Auckland Study Abroad Scholarships (Languages and Literature)
  • Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia (PMSA)
  • Individual universities grants and scholarships

Will I get credit for courses taken abroad?

Yes, upon completion of your exchange studies, Auckland Abroad will transfer credit to your University of Auckland academic record. Credit will be transferred only for courses that have been passed and approved by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland.

Note that it is not letter grades but credit that will be transferred back to your Engineering degree.

This credit (up to a maximum of 60 points of Part II or III) will not count towards the calculation of honours GPA.

Can I change my overseas courses?

If you wish to change your course enrolments at the host university, please obtain prior approval by contacting your department's study abroad advisor with a copy to the Engineering Student Centre at foe-enquiries@auckland.ac.nz.

You will need to provide relevant information such as course descriptions, level of course, course equivalent etc.
