“I wanted to study at one of the top universities in the world, and the University of Auckland was among the few institutions that offered the disaster management programme.

“I’m from the Philippines, and I used to work for a project regarding disaster risk reduction and mitigation, primarily focused on hazard mapping for floods. Disaster management has always been an interest for me, since I experienced many natural disasters in the Philippines. I wanted to make a difference to the developing disaster management sector in my country, and contribute to aid there.

“I love that the Master of Disaster Management is so multi-disciplinary – we are exposed to different aspects of disaster management including engineering, social science, and public health. The resources we are provided here to learn are amazing, and I like the environment that drives students to succeed.

“I’m currently consulting as a Transport Sector Analyst for a project called Private Markets for Climate Resilience under the Oscar M. Lopez Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Foundation. We are working on developing best practices in different countries in the transportation and agriculture sector. I’m able to use my civil engineering knowledge for the transportation infrastructure aspect, and the skills I gained from the Master of Disaster Management to help with building disaster resilience for a variety of countries.

“In the long term, I want to help improve the Disaster Risk Management sector in the Philippines, and become an expert in this field. I’d love to work in academia, and I think the education I got from the University of Auckland will help me make a huge difference in this field”.
