Introduction to new AUEA President Brent Meekan

Brent was born and raised in Papatoetoe and attended the School of Engineering at the University of Auckland from 1976 to 1979. He trained as a civil engineer, back in the days when civil engineering had a very broad range of interests. Brent joined Beca after graduation and was shortly thereafter despatched to Sabah in north Borneo on a road design project. Over the next decade, Brent worked extensively in Indonesia and enjoyed some very interesting projects, including the design and construction of an airport on Matak Island, in the remote Anambas Islands.

The nineties saw Brent working on a variety of road and airport projects in New Zealand and the south Pacific, running the Beca office in Kuala Lumpur and returning to New Zealand to lead the transportation team in Auckland.

Further challenges followed in the new millennium as Brent took on business management roles within Beca. He also became interested in project governance and worked on project alliances delivering highway improvements in the Auckland region. This experience in establishing and maintaining high performance project teams has been useful in helping build similar performance in business.

Brent has been active in the wider consulting industry, via the Association of Consultants and Engineers NZ.  He served on the ACENZ Board and later as President for two years. He has continued to work for the wider industry in safety, development of conditions of contract, and practice guidelines.  Brent is a Fellow of IPENZ and an Honorary Life Member of ACENZ.

Brent is married to Sue and they have one daughter. In his spare time he enjoys ocean swimming, cycling, and volunteer pest control work to aid the return of native birds to the Auckland isthmus.

In stepping up to the role of AUEA President, Brent is aware of the fine work already done by previous leaders and the wider Alumni. He believes that there is an opportunity to now reflect on the Association’s achievements to date and what its purpose will be into the next decade. He is keen to work with the Faculty, our Associates and Champions and the wider Alumni, to define and then deliver the outcomes we want for the Association.

Brent Meekan was elected President of the AUEA at the AGM in August.

Matt MacDougall - Development Manager

Engineering is all about finding practical solutions to real problems and I’m delighted to be in a position to help make that possible.

I emigrated from the UK eighteen years ago after spending many years in the commercial sector in both the UK and NZ.

I moved here to apply my skills and passion to improving the lives and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

Before joining the Faculty of Engineering in January, I was fundraising at Oxfam New Zealand and then the Blind Foundation.

I graduated with an engineering degree about a hundred years ago – or so it seems to me! However, I’ve never applied this knowledge to fundraising before now, so it’s great that I can do so in this role.

The University of Auckland's Engineering alumni are some of the most dedicated graduates in New Zealand. We’re very lucky to have your support. I look forward to strengthening those bonds and building tangible benefits for the next generation of students, the faculty as a whole, and of course, for the entire country. If you would like to financially support the Faculty please speak with Matt MacDougall.

We need your support

Successful economies are underpinned by a strong vibrant engineering fraternity. This requires a faculty with world class research and teaching to attract the brightest students.

After a substantial period of under-spending, New Zealand is now investing heavily in developing its infrastructure. Well trained engineers, a world class faculty and high calibre students are key to efficiently delivering this investment. Following the recent Christchurch earthquakes this need has never been more important.

Through your ongoing financial support to the AUEA we can assist the faculty to further strengthen the quality of learning and teaching, to encourage the best students and in turn train the ‘best’ engineers.

One of the faculty’s strategic goals is to be recognised unequivocally as one of the leading engineering schools in the world for quality of teaching programmes and research”. Our support and commitment will ensure the faculty can achieve this.

The AUEA has set itself an Endowment Fund target of $5 million raised over the next five years to support the faculty. We need our alumni to consider regular giving. If half of our graduates gave $250 per year, every year, we would exceed our target.

Remember no donation is too small.
