Become a Buddy!

Volunteers needed - Become a Postgraduate Buddy!

Are you a current postgraduate student interested in helping our new students settle into student life at the Faculty of Engineering? Are you interested in enhancing your CV with some volunteer experience which could lead to making life-long friends and learning about different cultures?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then we would like to hear from you.

What does being a Buddy involve?

Anyone can be a Buddy – as long as you are willing to help others and can direct newcomers to find resources and share some tips and experience – and it will help make life a lot easier for new students.

There will be a Buddy network behind you to share knowledge and support, so don’t worry if you don’t know everything (nobody does, that’s why we need a network).

Please check here to learn more about the Buddy Programme and the student experience.

By signing up to become a Buddy, you will make the following commitments:

  • Attend a training session before the beginning of Semester Two 2016 (we will email you with the details and timing).
  • Maintain active communication with your new students via email (and face to face meetup if mutually desired by the student and you):
    • Proactively check with your students their progress;
    • Respond to their questions by sharing tips/advice and directing them to the right services /resources.
  • Join the Buddy Programme Facebook Group, share common student questions and advice, tips, resources on the group page to benefit more people.

What can I make out of this programme?

Being a Buddy is a highly satisfying experience. It also provides a good network and opportunity for social activities and friendship. In this programme you will:

  • Be part of a warm active team
  • Receive friendship and the satisfaction of helping others
  • Receive an official citation of service from the Dean of Engineering marking your contribution
