Second wave of success for Engineering Waka Ama team

24 March 2017

The Faculty of Engineering's Waka Ama team has proven to be at the top of their game again – they were recently announced as champions for the second year running at the University of Auckland's Great Waka Ama race. We'd like to congratulate our team members, Nona Taute (Captain), Georgia Naera, Billy Bowman, Jess Retter, Vaoala Enesa, Sarah Carson, Dallas Watene and Josie Stevens, for all their hard work that led to this fantastic achievement.

The winning package includes a well-deserved, all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii in September, where our students will be competing in the Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Memorial Race. This is considered to be the largest Outrigger canoe race in the world, with hundreds of teams participating each year.

The 2017 Great Waka Ama race was held on 18 March. Contestants paddled from Takapuna Beach for four kilometres to Rangitoto Island and back. Teams from the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Law were announced as second and third place winners.
