Mechanical Engineering PhD candidate Pauls Davis has received sponsorship from Ports of Auckland to complete his research. Davis is pursuing his PhD thesis in Innovation Management, and researching the conditions needed to develop an innovation ecosystem in New Zealand firms. Part of his study will be to analyse the innovation capability of local firms.

Davis had previously participated in the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s Solve It programme, where students form teams to solve challenging business problems from New Zealand businesses and organisations. Ports of Auckland was one of the industry clients for the programme. “The two-week programme was very intense and it was exciting to use problem solving skills and work with a diverse team of University students. I would encourage other research students to participate in similar programs, and to think about the value and real world impact of their research areas”.

Ports of Auckland also found their collaborative efforts with the University of Auckland to be a valuable experience. “Having access to the new perspectives of students has energised our business. We are now proud to support the University as it conducts and applies research of the highest quality”, says Diane Edwards, General Manager of People, Systems and Technology. “We know that the research will not only benefit our business but also New Zealand and society as a whole”.
